POP Module 4 - Tools and Apps
Wireless Alignment and Optimization
Learn wireless fundamentals, sector antenna operation, LiteBeam alignment techniques, signal optimization tools, and troubleshooting connectivity issues
Learning Objectives
By the end of this module, you will be able to:
Understand how wireless signals propagate in rural agricultural settings
Identify the role of the Rocket M2 sector antenna at the hub building
Perform precise LiteBeam alignment using signal strength feedback
Use alignment tools and mobile apps to optimize connectivity
Troubleshoot common connectivity issues including interference and weather impacts
Maintain stable, high-performance wireless links over time
Alignment Tools and Applications
Software and hardware tools to assist with alignment and optimization
While the LiteBeam's built-in interface is the primary alignment tool, several additional tools can make the process easier and more precise.
Alignment Tools & Resources
Essential tools for POP trailer antenna alignment and network verification
Ubiquiti UISP Mobile App
Features:
- Real-time signal strength display
- Audio feedback (beeps faster as signal improves)
- Device discovery and management
- Configuration access
- Network diagnostics
Availability:
- iOS: App Store (free)
- Android: Google Play (free)
- Requires UISP account (free to create)
💡 Recommended for Alignment: The audio feedback feature is especially useful—you can listen to the beeping while adjusting the antenna without constantly looking at the screen. Faster beeps = stronger signal.
Compass and GPS Tools
Smartphone Compass Apps:
- iOS: Built-in Compass app
- Android: "Compass" by PixelProse SARL (free) or similar
- Use to determine bearing from POP to hub
- Helps with initial rough alignment
GPS Coordinate Tools:
- Record POP deployment coordinates for documentation
- Calculate distance to hub (useful for signal strength expectations)
- Google Maps or similar can calculate bearing between two coordinates
Physical Alignment Aids
Binoculars:
- Helps visually identify hub antenna from distance
- Useful for verifying antenna orientation on hub building
- Any standard binoculars (8x or 10x magnification) are sufficient
Bubble Level:
- Verify trailer is level before raising mast
- Can attach to antenna mounting bracket to check level orientation
- Small torpedo level works well
Marker/Tape:
- Mark optimal antenna position on mounting bracket
- Useful if antenna needs to be removed and reinstalled
- Helps verify alignment hasn't shifted over time
Network Testing Tools
Speed Test Applications:
- Speedtest by Ookla: Most popular, available on web and mobile
- Fast.com: Simple web-based test by Netflix
- Use to verify throughput after alignment
- Run multiple tests and average results
WiFi Analyzer Apps:
- Android: "WiFi Analyzer" by farproc (free)
- iOS: Limited due to iOS restrictions, but "Network Analyzer" works
- Shows local WiFi coverage from POP access points
- Helps identify channel interference
Ping and Latency Tests:
- Command line:
ping 8.8.8.8(Windows/Mac/Linux) - Latency should be <50 ms for good performance
- Packet loss should be 0% or near 0%
